An Exception to the Rule...

I hope you'll indulge me this non-gardening post. Today has been an emotional day and I'm just not up to a gardening post right now. The events at VA Tech today hit much too close as my DD is a student there and, in fact, resides in the dorm that has been in the news so much today. Fortunately, she is fine.

I'm sure I'll get up in the morning and the garden will call to me. For now, though, my heart is heavy for over thirty families who are getting the worst news...

  1. Oh, good heavens, I'm so glad your daughter is safe. What a heart-wrenching day indeed. I'm so sorry that you have to endure this and that no one seems to have an answer for this senseless violence. Take heart in your garden when you're up to it and remember we're all thinking of you.

  2. I was so sorry to hear all that news. Your garden will call you to come out, work in it and give you time to sort it all out, if such a thing can be sorted out.

  4. Oh, I can't even imagine what you are feeling. This is such a huge tragedy and I'm sure you just want to envelope your daughter in your arms and not let go for a very long time. My prayers to you both and also to the other families involved in any way.

  5. Gotta Garden, no words of wisdom, just a virtual hug for both of you and sadness for the other families.

Garden blogging is apparently an interwoven world, since Pam of Tales from the Lab and Mary the nature photographer also have personal connections to Virginia Tech. But theirs are not as terrifying as yours must be.

  8. I saw Annie's comment on the blog Mary's View--and just had to stop by.
I don't know anyone at VA Tech, but as a parent who has live through the heart-stopping events of 9/11 (with a daughter in school within sight of the Pentagon), I know how awful it is.
I am glad your daughter is safe, and grieve that at least 32 parents and families are dumb-struck with grief today.

  9. GG, words can't begin to describe the heartache I'm feeling for you, your daughter and all the people involved in this nightmare.

Relief that your daughter is safe but still this is a horrific event that will stay with her (and you) for all time. I hope you find healing in the near future, gentle times and lots of smiles.

    Hugs,
    Melanie

  10. Thank you all so much. It means a great deal that you took the time to leave such comforting words.

My daughter is home now as classes have been canceled for the rest of the week. We took her out to dinner and I thought how blessed we are to be able to do something as ordinary as that.

    Thank you again.

  12. My daughter took some classes a Vtech several years ago because her school didn't offer the courses. I'm glad she wasn't there when this happened and I'm glad your daughter is ok. Gives me chills to think what could have happened.

  13. Like Annie, I have no words of wisdom... but I am sending you a cyber-hug as well. I am very glad that you were able to enjoy a very ordinary dinner with your daughter yesterday. I hope that you two are able to help each other lighten your hearts this week.

  14. Thank you all. I think my daughter is better off here this week, although she has had thoughts of returning. Some of her art friends are working on a mural there and I think she wants to help with it. The pressure of the media was so intense that her thoughts were to just get away for a bit. Her dorm was not a good place to be.

  15. Wow...cyber-hug from me as well! It's terrific you got to spend time with your daughter during a much-needed break! Hope she can work through all the emotions that go along with something like this...I'm sure that mural will help a lot.

Gotta Comment? Great! Thanks in advance for taking the time. I'll get back to you as soon as possible, assuming I'm not in the garden...because there, I lose all track of time...(Don't you?)...Take care now.
