2008 AHS National Convention...Garden Seven

Here we are at the garden of Leon & Paula Payne known as Payne's In the Grass Dayily Farm. Let me just tell you right up front that I missed THE picture here. The Paynes live on the property beyond the fenced border of the daylily farm/garden. Unbeknownst to me, (okay, I am not always the most observant) beyond the fence is a backyard pool on the bottom of which is a tiled daylily (or daylilies). I understand there were daylilies floating in the pool as well. Later, I was told you could even see it from the bus, but maybe I was on the other side of the bus....whatever, I wish I had seen it (and then, so could you)!

The Paynes are hybridizers and we are going to see some of their creations. Hold onto your hat (except at Boot Hill...more on that later), you will be impressed!

A sea of daylilies in bloom surrounded us.....We can stop to have a rest later, there are dayliles to see! (Do notice the boot birdhouse...)

Hybridizing going on...future beauties...

I think this may be a seedling of the Paynes'....how I wish I had taken more pictures of their seedlings...

It can be really hard to see everything you want/plan to see in these special gardens...there's just so much to take in and time is short...one could spend, as you might imagine, days in this one. Many thanks to the Paynes for allowing us all in and for the beautiful daylilies coming out of Texas!

  1. Ohmygoodness! What a beautiful post! I absolutely love daylilies. It would have been very hard for me to be there without wanting to take several home. Thank you for sharing this, though. You must have had a wonderful time.

  2. What beautiful daylilies. I have always has a distant unrequited love affair with daylilies as I have never had enough room to grow them. It would seem such a shame to have only one or two.

The look so beautiful in large groupings.

  3. Oh Shady Gardener, I do know what you mean, but they force us along...hehe. We usually got around 45 minutes in a garden....and then it was back on the bus!

They are addictive, Greg W! Like potato chips...no one can have just one! They do make for wonderful landscaping...but for those of us with small yards, we just have to stuff them in everywhere...one large grouping would take up too much real estate! So, just like I enjoy seeing ground covers do their thing in large gardens, I also enjoy seeing, like you, daylilies allowed to grow into large clumps.

  4. Very beautiful, honestly. I can relate to what you do, at least somewhat haha. I love all things that grow so that's why I try as hard I can to help revive this planet in the most efficient way that I can possible. You never know when one day you'll wake up and really smell the smog from your kitchen window or living room. Family to me is really most important, and with people like us trying to at least help the planet even just a bit, will most definitely help one like myself sleep better at night knowing that my family's next day waking up feels a bit safer :)

Gotta Comment? Great! Thanks in advance for taking the time. I'll get back to you as soon as possible, assuming I'm not in the garden...because there, I lose all track of time...(Don't you?)...Take care now.
