Recently, DH and I were in Cincinnati (daylily doings about which I'll blog about another time). While there, my DH took me to the Krohn Conservatory. It was quite a delight as you'll see.
Right across the street was this sundial...
Although it was pretty cold in Ohio, there wasn't snow (as you can see)...but, still let's head inside...
The entry has these very nice stained glass panels (not so easy to photograph...clearly...)
It feels good to be inside...
Why, here's Mr. Krohn...
Lewis Ginter has some of these benches...I would guess they are popular in a number of conservatories/gardens...especially those with butterfly exhibits...
But, let's head on down...it looks very tropical...
Whoa...that's some indoor waterfall...it does feel like we are in the tropics...
Complete with creatures...
Even a Mermaid...
...to oversee the koi...
Look at this wild thing...
Looking up...
So tranquil...
Let's keep going...
Undoubtedly, a begonia...
More blooms...
You know this one, of course, a gardenia...
Let's move into another area...
Lots of spring bulbs in this area...which are fun to see...interesting color combinations...
As one might expect, there are citrus fruits in the conservatory...
You might remember that in one of the tour gardens at the 2008 AHS National Convention there were Ponderosa Lemons...which were simply huge...here, in Cincinnati, they are ripening...
Lemon blossoms...
Over here....let's look at some bonsai...
Pretty impressive...
Next, we'll go into the orchid area...I always love looking at orchids....they are guarded by these...
One of the first orchids I see is large container of Nun's Orchrids (I recognize them!)...
closer...
Very cool...Butterworts....as an aside, Henry Mitchell would remind you to say "wert"....I had been told that carniverous plants are great with orchids....guess so...
Don't these look like little faces??
Next up...the desert area...
I'm not big on deserts, but I thought I saw something familar and surprising in here...
Do you see them? Looks like oxalis to me...
Sedum...
I have new appreciation for these...barrel cactus, I believe...after visiting a garden in San Diego last year...one of these days I'll get around to sharing it...
Okay, we're pretty much done...outside, on our way to the car...when what do I see???
Do you see them?? But, of course...winter aconite...
....sigh....growing everywhere (just kidding) but for me in Stafford, VA....
Hope you enjoyed our little break from the cold of winter. It was fun to see flowers and feel nice and warm. We have to get back to the hotel because soon it will be time for me to take an Exhibition Judge Class at the AHS Region 2 Winter Meeting.....more on that soon...
What a fun visit. I can see I need a drive to Des Moines. They have a nice little conservatory.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. Looks like you had fun!

What a wonderful breath of spring your photos are! Thanks for sharing all this beautiful color.
ReplyDeleteIt was almost a year ago that we visited the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens in NYC and this post brought back those fond memories.
Isn't it wonderful being surrounded by so much beauty?
I enjoyed the tour soooo! Especially the walk around the Citrus Conservatory! I love the butterfly exhibit - very artistic! I see you had a gala time and so did I, watching the photos!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I now want citrus fruits, a blue-flowered torch, those awesome guards of the orchids, and... a winter aconite. OH, maybe I at least have the latter already? I may have to go check... :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the welcome respite from winter!
You had definitely enjoyed such a beautiful place, and also took nice photographs to post here.
