Hellebores

The hellebores are getting going. Some are lagging a bit, but that may have to do with where they are sited. I'm hopeful of seeing some bloom this year that haven't before. They've struggled with heavy workmen feet on them in some areas and with erosion in others. The ones that have made it are survivors.

My most favorite double...from Heronswood....when it was still in Washington State...although, I think the nursery had been bought (just not moved...yet)...

Here's another double, probably a Pine Knot Farms one...

A generic spotted one...

Some stippling on this one....I especially appreciated the up turned face...not typical of hellebore blooms (although they are probably hybridizing for them)....

Here's what I mean....a different one, but you can see the bloom so much better...

Closer, as this is a particularly nice one...

Finally, for today, a very green centered one...

  1. All very nice hellebores, especially the doubles! I have been working on our collection of hellebores on a permanent page on my blog.

As to the workmen damaging them. Last winter we piled 2 foot of dirt on several hellebores, it stayed for months. Once uncovered the flowers were remarkable, no damage at all.

  6. Oh Randy, I am glad yours survived! I lost a number of things to the workmen (lessons learned) including my prized hardy cyclamen that had become quite large...sigh....

The worst for the hellebores, I think, was having a section of fence lay on them....which I didn't discover until too late...still, two out of three appear to have made it and one looks to bloom...all three were doubles that I had nursed along from tiny starts. Had I realized the damage that would occur, I would have taken more drastic measures to protect things. Live and learn.

I'll have to come have a look at your hellebores...this time of year, they are such a welcome sight...I am already trying to figure out where I might add more...ha.

Hi Gabi...using Google translator, I hope this is correct...

No need to be Shady Gardener...if you only knew how many I have lost...Even though they are tough, I sometimes subject them to conditions even they have a hard time tolerating!

Me, too, HHG...once you see the doubles, they really steal the show. However, some of those picotee ones are pretty neat, too.

    Talibra, for you, too...

    Thanks everyone for dropping by...

Gotta Comment? Great! Thanks in advance for taking the time. I'll get back to you as soon as possible, assuming I'm not in the garden...because there, I lose all track of time...(Don't you?)...Take care now.
