Last year around this time, we were making our way southward to Baton Rouge, LA, for the 2011 AHS National Convention. Travel took us two days but afforded me the opportunity to arrive early enough to take in some open gardens. I was especially interested in Crochet Daylily Garden as Mr. Clarence Crochet is legendary for his daylilies...and his jokes.
Driving up, this is my first view...
It was a bright beautiful sunny day. Keep that in mind as you view the daylilies.
Other daylily lovers were already enjoying the garden.
Those red zinnias were really eye catching.
A huge clump of Lacy Marionette was one of the first I saw.
As you'll see, zinnias edged the beds all around.
Eager to see the daylilies, here were a few that I saw right away:
Secret of Contentment...
Paco Bell...
Watchyl Dancing Spider...
Pineapple Moon...
If you didn't know, this is an AHS Display Garden.
Pat Soileau...
King of Ages...
Fabulous Black Pearl...
The Terminator...
Carol Todd...
Dixie Highway...
Red Eye Gravy...
Memphis...
A very large clump of Strawberry Candy...
Fingers of Time...
Wind Beneath My Sails...
Alexa Kathryn...
Ageless Beauty...
Some very colorful dragonflies...
Pale Moon Windmill clump...
and closer...
Hotter Than July...
Duck's Luck...
Jamaican Music...
Mr. Crochet himself extracting daylilies...
Four views of Richfield Muriel's Double...
Richfield Eye Shocker...
In Search of Angels...
Daylilies lined out...
Two of Alex Sheets...
Better Than Butter...
World Class Oddity...
All American Windmill...
Mr. Lucky...
Deep in daylily discussions...
Delaware Doozy...
Two of Beth Crochet...
Grant Simon...
The Hulk...
Beauty everywhere...
Grand Pacific...
Rose Windmill...
Spring Blush...
Another critter....
The famous King Kahuna...
Two of Bernice Guidry...
Crinums...
It's time for me to head out. I've enjoyed my time very much here. Thank you, Mr. Crochet, for allowing us to enjoy your garden and all its beautiful blooms.
Some lucky person's haul...

ReplyDeleteDo you not think it's hard to go home without taking quite a number of those beautiful daylilies with you??? :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat pics you have posted at your blog i have enjoyed your article and pics really very impressive..
ReplyDeleteThank you for post.
Thanks, Ed. I'm working on the next one, the first one on tour, actually.
ReplyDeleteWish we could share, Bev, or better yet...balance it out so that we don't have dry months.
Haha, Shady Gardener, you do know me too well. However, I am so so so space constrained these days. Plus, the Rude Monster is busy clearing the backyard (not on my schedule)...not with my approval, mind you. I am actually being rather constrained these days.
Let me say, though, that it would be the usual convention to not return with some new plants and I did get two on the bus. Sadly, (sort of) I missed out on another as they were handed out to others after telling some of us to go on in the hotel, that they would be handed out tomorrow. (Can you tell I'm still pouting??)
Plus, let me delicately say that rust was an issue and I'll just leave it at that.
Thank you, Stein Garden. And, thanks everyone!
