Something Very Nice Happened...

....a surprise box was delivered to me. Inside was a letter and a daylily from Georgia Daylily Hybridizer Tim Herrington.

Tim and his late wife, Katiesue, spoke at Lilyhemmer 2007 and those us lucky to be present will never forget it. Tim and Katiesue had us laughing and hanging onto every word. None of us knew it would be Katisue's last public appearance...

Fast forward...Tim asked if he could have a few images I was lucky enough to have...and I happily forwarded them to him. In return, Tim sent me a beautiful tribute he had compiled about Katisue and their life together. He also told me that he'd send me a daylily. I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't respond....I just didn't know what to say..

Luckily for me, Tim decided to send me one of his beautiful Cupcake daylilies...Cotton Candy Cupcake. I am thrilled to have it, of course....and did send him a thank you email. I learned a little something...perhaps it might help you in a similar circumstance. Tim explained in his response to my thank you email that the images reminded him of a happy time with Katisue...

I guess I was so focused on what I was thinking (that sending the images was just a tiny thing) that I didn't really think about what they might mean to him. Thanks so much to Tim for his thoughtfulness. It's easy to see what Katisue loved so much about him...and why.

I'll be looking to say hello to you, Tim, down in Florida next week. And, anyone else that makes the journey to the 2009 AHS National Convention. See you there!

2008 AHS National Convention...Garden Nine

Here we are at our final stop. It's afternoon and still the daylilies look divine...what a garden! It belongs to Drs. Art and Nina Imperial. Yes, this is the garden of the real 'Art Imperial' (many folks own the daylily). We can hardly wait to get off the bus to begin exploring this garden.

This is a stunning garden, very tropical...with daylilies all over.

Unfortunately, tours do come to an end...Thanks so much to the Imperial Family for hosting all of us in your amazing garden. Many of us saw plants we can only grow as houseplants happily growing in your garden...what fun!

But, actually, for those us going back to the hotel, the final banquet still remains. At this one, awards and honors are presented. See the AHS website for a complete list. This year (2008) in Houston, Texas, two very big awards were presented to Texas' own, Jack Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter was the recipient of both the 2007 Stout Silver Medal (the highest award for a daylily) for LAVENDER BLUE BABY and the 2008 Betrand Farr Silver Medal (representing outstanding hybridizing achievement). Congratulations, Mr. Carpenter!

In case you missed the previous eight gardens, you can find them here (just keep scrolling down....it probably starts with this one)...or, go to the labels on the right and click on 2008 AHS National Convention.

Lest you think you might go into daylily tour withdrawal, never fear. The 2009 AHS National Convention is this month, May 2009...with eight gardens on tour, an extra tour with three more gardens...and other open gardens. So, not to worry, there are more tour gardens to see.

It's not too late to join the fun for this year, click here.
