Blooming in September....

...and will continue until frost is Kleim's Hardy Gardenia...

Although it doesn't exactly cover itself in blooms like I would like, it is certainly nice to have a gardenia make it here. The first few years were iffy, but it's now a pretty good sized shrub. It's in a bit of a protected location but also endures less sun than it probably would like.

This one and the gardenia Chuck Hayes are the only two of several that I have tried to persevere here. Chuck Hayes suffered greatly this last winter (which wasn't a particularly harsh winter) and I lost about half of the shrub. It's doing okay. I think its problem is the late freezes we can have here...it pops out with its new spring growth too early and then really suffers.

Now THAT'S a Spider...

'Tis spider season....and while I often see these garden spiders, this is a particularly large one...maybe the largest I've seen. I happened upon her (if you follow the link, you'll know why) while digging daylilies; fortunately, I spied her before I ran into the quite awesome web.

I got a kick out of noticing all the weed seeds caught in the web (one of the reasons I saw it)...it's been quite the year for weeds...oh my.

It's been a bit rainy today, so I haven't been out to check to see if she is still there....

I was glad to learn these spiders are considered harmless, since she is quite scary looking...and also because, well, there are more than a few of them around...

Seeing Red...

Mr. Cardinal came in for a pretty close look...

...he's sitting in the pot ghetto....

Later, he moved to the bench...more comfortable, I suppose (joke...haha)...

....it was pretty neat to have him around. I hope he and the missus will stay....they just need to be extra cautious...Sam and Leo, you know...

Garlic Time!

Today my order from Filaree Farm arrived. Yippee! You know how I love my garlic...

I had forgotten how much I had ordered (nine varieties!)....which, I suppose, is what happens when you order in early March and are longing for spring and gardening season to begin...

I thought it might be interesting to see the order:

Neat, huh?

I have garlic downstairs in the basement...where the lighting isn't too good...especially when you go down there at night (like just a few minutes ago...)...

So, I have the new garlic (plus...ahem...a few varieties I just ordered from Territorial...how can I resist??) and this garlic to plant this fall...like now...

Sorry for the dark pictures...you get the idea....I'm excited to plant all the garlic and looking forward to...yum...trying all the varieties!

It Takes Two...

The daylily that began the collecting bug in me...Pearl Harbor...once I saw and felt its substance, I was hooked. Who knew daylilies could be like this!

New this year and sent as a bonus by hybridizer Paul Owen, Faber Sabre:

Blooming in the pot ghetto...imagine what it will do once planted and given some time to settle...wow.

From the AHS Daylily Database:

Faber Sabre (Owen-P., 2009)
height 28", bloom 7.75", season EM, Rebloom, Semi-Evergreen, Diploid, Fragrant, 24 buds, 4 branches, Bright lemon yellow self above huge green throat. ((Midwest Majesty × Pink Super Spider) × Lady Fingers)

Another bonus....however, this one has been here for a while....and has earned its spot, Scintillating Suzette:

I keep having thoughts of moving this one out as it has a primo spot...then, I see a picture like this or notice, as I did the other day, that it is putting up yet another rebloom scape....sigh. I'm having trouble making the hard cuts (no!)...

Love Spills Over:

*****

No rain today...*grin*. Attended a daylily meeting today in Maryland and heard about some pretty terrible damage from all the rain up there. We were lucky in my area. And, for maybe the first time, no new daylilies came home with me. Progress! (Okay, I did sort of indicate that I would purchase one from a friend....but, I don't have it...yet.)

I am proud to say that I will soon (after the first of the year) be a board member on one of the daylily clubs I belong to. Ha. I'm looking forward to it, I think. So, I will be making treks north of me a bit more frequently.

Still expecting a few more daylilies for fall delivery....I have no idea where they are going, but somehow, these things work out. And, hopefully, these cooler days will continue and I can get out and get some much needed yard work completed.

Later....

Update

It's rained practically all day long....which is not a bad thing. We can use it and boy, could Texas use it.

So, I happened to glance out the window tonight...and I saw that the very last bloom on the seedling I showed recently was open. Here it is something like 6:15 pm and there's the bloom...huge and glowing.

I had to go see it and then I decided to pick it. It has unbelievable substance. Here it is night and after all this rain...whoa...

Impressive. I am a bit sentimental about this daylily for reasons I'll talk about another time. If...a big if...it has a good year next year, it might just be worthy. Time will tell.

It's pretty good size, too. And, it had first year rebloom...yea.

Can't wait for next year!

Daylilies That Make the Grade...

....at least here at Gotta Garden...

Skinwalker:

From the AHS Daylily Database:

Skinwalker (Roberts-N., 1997)
height 32", bloom 8.5", season M, Dormant, Diploid, Spider Ratio 5.20:1, Lavender blend with a green throat.

Stout Medal winner, too. Maybe one of these days the database will include awards also. Skinwalker is a tall one, with sturdy scapes. I like that. It holds itself above everyone, tall and proud.

Jelly Dancer (in the morning):

and in full sun:

From the AHS Daylily Database:

Jelly Dancer (Herr-D., 2010)
height 52", bloom 7", season La, Dormant, Diploid, 25 buds, 3 branches, UFo Cascade , Maroon with darker eye above yellow to green throat. (Android × Kirsten's Corsage)

A
nother tall one, blooming this year for the first time for me (I think...of course, it could just be that...ahem...I didn't finish sorting last year's pictures...). I really like Don Herr's plants as they do well for me (grin). This one will get even taller as it has not yet attained its full height, which is not unusual for the tall ones. You need to give them a bit of time (like a couple years or so). Got this one on introduction and lucky me, Don gifted me another plant with my order this year. Hopefully, I'll actually get around to the much anticipated (by me) rearranging that I want to do this fall and will add my new plant to this one...yippee, a clump!

Heavenly Flight of Angels:

From the AHS Daylily Database:

Heavenly Flight of Angels (Gossard, 2003)
height 39", bloom 7", season M, Semi-Evergreen, Diploid, Fragrant, 15 buds, 3 branches, Spider Ratio 4.00:1, Yellow green blend with white edge above green throat. (Flutterbye × Wildest Dreams)

This one needs to be moved to the front yard where I can enjoy it a bit more. Sigh. If only the front yard had endless space...lol.

Not all spideries to look at today...

Captivating Smile:

From the AHS Daylily Database:

Captivating Smile (Rice-J., 2005)
height 30", bloom 5.5", season EM, Semi-Evergreen, Tetraploid, 26 buds, 4 branches, Violet with watermark and gold violet edge above green throat. (Meggie's Smile × Angel's Braid)

N
ow that's what we like to see. Many more blooms to look forward to. Another one that needs to be moved.

I'll end with this one for now. Ethel Buccola:

From the AHS Daylily Database:

Ethel Buccola (Trimmer, 2005)
height 28", bloom 5", season EM, Rebloom, Evergreen, Tetraploid, 24 buds, 2 branches, Apricot pink with pencil red eye above green throat. (Tennyson × Tet. Connie Burton)

I
would have to say that orange/peach is definitely underrepresented here at Gotta Garden. No matter how much I try, most just don't appeal to me. But, there are some. This is one. And, I'm sure I'll show you a few others that also make the grade here down the road...
