Gotta Garden

Thursday, June 21, 2012

I keep thinking I will get here daily.  Good intentions and all that.

This is Skinwalker, an enormous bloom.  It can be hard to tell just how large a bloom is, so I picked it and saw that it nearly filled this birdbath.

Here's the same bloom before I plucked it:

Skinwalker (Roberts-N., 1997)
height 32", bloom 8.5", season M, Dormant, Diploid, Spider Ratio 5.20:1,  Lavender blend with a green throat.
Another one that I like is Portofino:

Portofino (Grace-Smith, 2004)
height 32", bloom 6", season E, Semi-Evergreen, Tetraploid, 35 buds, 5 branches,  Pink self above green throat. (Front Porch Swing × Linda's Magic)
Here's Portofino hanging out with Eternal Warrior:

After a long hot day, Peggy Jeffcoat still looked great:

Peggy Jeffcoat (Joiner-J., 1995)
height 18", bloom 6.5", season MLa, Rebloom, Dormant, Diploid, Double,  Yellow self with light green throat. (Jean Swann × Rebecca Marie)
The performance of this one, Forsyth Frostbound, is pretty lackluster, at least for me.  However, I still keep it around because the bloom is so unique and...I like it:

Forsyth Frostbound (Lefever, 1994)
height 24", bloom 5.5", season M, Dormant, Diploid, Fragrant,  Rose and white bicolor with green throat. (sdlg × Beverly Ann)
(I do break my own rules...lol)
Rock Solid lives up to its name:

Rock Solid (Stamile, 2002)
height 27", bloom 4.75", season EM, Rebloom, Dormant, Tetraploid, Very Fragrant, 32 buds, 6 branches,  Cream with plum violet eye and edge above green throat. (Inner Destiny × Francois Verhaert)
Ram often has these interesting little notches in the petals:

Ram (Whatley, 1994) height 25", bloom 7", season MLa, Rebloom, Semi-Evergreen, Tetraploid,  Yellow self with white edge and green throat. (Fred Ham × sdlg)
Michael Miller is a good performer.  Story has it that the real Michael Miller asked Patrick Stamile to name his best white (at that time) after him.  I should confirm this with Michael one of these days (smile).

Michael Miller (Stamile, 2000)
height 30", bloom 6", season EM, Rebloom, Evergreen, Tetraploid, 22 buds, 3 branches,  White with gold edge above green throat. (Great White × Platinum and Gold)
Wow, time does fly by.  Hard to realize the daylily Michael Miller is 12 years old.  The real Michael Miller is quite the hybridizer in his own right these days.  More than a few Small World cultivars reside here.
Linda's Magic is another nice daylily:

 Linda's Magic (Grace-Smith, 2003)
height 26", bloom 6.5", season EM, Rebloom, Semi-Evergreen, Tetraploid, 30 buds, 5 branches,  Pink self. (Tet. Linda Agin × sdlg)
I believe Linda's Magic was named for Linda Agin.  Sadly, she's left us for that big garden in the sky.  I'm sure she's creating wondrous flowers there.
Finally, this one is new here, Elisa Dallas.  I've seen it for several years in tour gardens and it always caught my eye.  It's still settling in this year.

Elisa Dallas (Trimmer, 2004)
height 25", bloom 5", season EM, Rebloom, Evergreen, Tetraploid, 25 buds, 3 branches,  Pastel pink with red eye above green throat. ((Raspberry Beret × Dan Mahony) × Tet. Connie Burton)
I could go on and on...back soon.

***
Because I know you want to know (smile), here's how the rest of the garlic turned out...

Okay, I'm happy enough with these, although I think all were harvested a bit too early...

Khabar...

Chesnok Red...

Duganski...

Duganski and Chesnok Red appeared very similar.  I was a bit conflicted about which one a particular row belonged to...and ended up giving them to Duganski.  (That's what happens when you start out labeling in one direction and somehow end up labeling in the other...)

Here are the LOSERS...

Yes, if you're particularly good at reading upside down, you'll note Georgian Crystal twice.  That's because I had some to replant from last season and I managed to re-order some anew.  Ahem.

I thought I remembered that Georgian Crystal had done well for me.  Well, not anymore.  And, unlike all my previous years, I took all those tiny heads and put them in a bowl on my kitchen counter.  In previous years, I would have picked out a few cloves that I felt were sorta, kinda, maybe big enough and replanted them.  I give up on that.  None...None...have ever gotten larger over time.  My advice is simple:  Only plant large cloves.  Period.

That's it for this year's garlic report.  Until fall (smile)...when I plant again and, of course, will try new varieties.

I Think Pink

Daylilies!  Each day I awake to new openings.  Such an exciting time of year!  (It's the only time of year I eagerly get up in the morning...I am not a morning person.)

Leading off today is BLUE PINK BEAUTY...

BPB has been here for a number of years, but this year, 2012, is a break out year for it.  Check  out these amazing scapes...

Blue Pink Beauty (Stamile, 2002)
height 28", bloom 5.5", season M, Rebloom, Dormant, Tetraploid, Fragrant, 43 buds, 6 branches,  Blue pink blend above green throat. ((Poetic Voice × Shimmering Elegance) × (Big Sur × Great White))

Why its taken so long is anyone's guess.  I'm just going to enjoy it, though.

MISSOURI MEMORIES is another pretty one...

Missouri Memories (Hansen, 1992)
height 26", bloom 6", season L, Rebloom, Evergreen, Diploid,  Pale orchid pink with lavender violet band above green throat.

By a Region 3 hybridizer, WILD CHERRY WINE...

Wild Cherry Wine (Bennett-F., 2004)
height 25", bloom 6.5", season EM, Dormant, Diploid, 23 buds, 4 branches,  Reddish pink blend with darker edge above small green to yellow throat. (These Foolish Things × Runaway Romance)

An old favorite, usually recurved like this...BARBARA MITCHELL...

However, if you get out early enough, you can catch it before it recurves...

Barbara Mitchell (Pierce-C., 1984)
height 20", bloom 6", season M, Rebloom, Semi-Evergreen, Diploid,  Pink self with green throat. (Fairy Tale Pink × Beverly Ann)

NO MORE TEARS...

No More Tears (Emmerich, 2003)
height 28", bloom 5.5", season EM, Rebloom, Dormant, Tetraploid, 15 buds, 2 branches,  Hot pink with pale ivory pink watermark and wire gold edge above green throat. (Seminole Wind × Ed Brown)

MOJAVE SUNRISE...

...grows behind a dogwood, so sometimes I don't make the trek over and around for a closeup...

Mojave Sunrise (Pickles, 2004)
height 28", bloom 5", season EM, Rebloom, Semi-Evergreen, Tetraploid,  Cream brushed yellow with light mulberry eye above lime green throat. (Antique Fringe × Wisest of Wizards)

I do like pink.  You know there will be more pink to come in the days ahead.  But, for right now, I can enjoy some of these early ones.  Shhh....Missouri Memories is supposed to be late.  We won't tell it.  These are probably scapes that formed late last year for rebloom that didn't happen.  Will be interesting to see if reblooms this year.  And, Barbara Mitchell, she's early like a lot of things this year, but is generally fairly early in the daylily season around here, anyway. Blue Pink Beauty is registered as a mid season, but not this year, apparently.
