Rolling On....

It's so fun to go outside and see what's new...I think we're at least two weeks ahead, possibly more.

I wasn't sure for a long time if this variety was indeed February Gold, but it does look like the other pictures on daffseek...

Because I always like a close up...

Still waiting on the new February Gold purchased last year from a different source...

Newly opened Cassata...will turn all white with time...

Also just opening is Arrowhead, a Cyclamineus type that will recurve as it matures...

My dwindling Easter Bonnet...growing amongst the tree roots and being shaded out by azaleas...

Other flowers....Pink Roman Hyacinth...quite the vigorous bulb, unlike its blue cousin...

Cyclamen Coum...

Iris reticulata...this one blooms in the foliage, not an attractive trait...

A better picture of Galanthus Viridapice (no wind)...

One of the Golden Lotus Strain hellebores...

And...the worst for last....beware daffodil virus (these will be removed tomorrow)....remember, no mercy!

Early Daffodils

Hollywood:

Wings of Freedom:

closer:

Barret Browning:

A couple of Easter Bonnet...a good thing as those bulbs I laboriously pulled out of the tree roots...well, it appears I mixed them up...and they now reside elsewhere...hope they enjoy them...

Changing Colors...beginning to change...

I just like this picture of a group of Changing Colors...nice that daffs allow you multiple days to photograph them...

A better picture of Blazing Star...now open:

This was labeled Orangery...but, I'm not sure that it is:

Just beginning to open...an unknown yellow that once open has near flawless blooms...

You didn't really think we'd have just daffodils today, did you? Here's the blue Roman Hyacinth...which does not increase like its cousin, the pink one...

Very first blooms on the creeping phlox...it's so pretty when it blankets the area:

First blooms last year on this creeping phlox were on 3/16/08...this year, 3/23/09...

*****
Off to dig daylilies...hope to plant peas (after I seriously weed the area) today also as we are expecting rain tonight. Found some lettuce starts yesterday (Romaine and Red Sails)...hope to get them in as well...

Late Winter...Early Blooms

The Daphnes are blooming!

Here's Alden's Regal Red...note the solid green leaves...

Try not to notice the winter damage...it'll be gone shortly... here's my favorite, Aureo-marginata, and as the name would indicate...notice the edge...

Yippee! Daphnes are divine for fragrance....as if you didn't know by my posting about them every year....

First of the tulips...

I thought I'd celebrate the crocus one last time as they are about done. I think there's one variety I have that is still to bloom...

Caught these guys before they opened wide to the sun...

Then later...

My fav Cream Beauties...

purples...

and whites...

The hyacinths are just beginning...

These are pink Roman Hyacinths...they increase like crazy here...

One last look at the early iris reticulata as their time is soon over...

The earliest of the daffodils....here's Cum Laude...which will need to be lifted this fall and spread around to give the bulbs more room...

This is a dwarf daffodil, Topolino...such a cute little thing...

closer...

February Gold....I think I should call mine March Gold...

closer...

This is NOT Gigantic Star, unfortunately....simply not gigantic in any way, but nice...and yellow...and in late winter, we'll take it...

Some Slim Whitman perhaps, but not Fragrant Breeze...

Some unknowns and Ice Follies:

Inside, we are watching the daylily seedlings grow and getting our rest. This is Leo....stretched out....all 11 pounds of him...in a dog bed meant for 100 lb. dogs...

Daffodil Parade and More....

Getting right to it, more daffodil pictures....plus other spring things....and, if you hang on, something at the end that really made my day! Some of these pictures are from yesterday. Others are from today (you'll see the raindrops...yea rain, we need all we can get to fill those reservoirs so that our water restrictions can go away...).

Gigantic Star (above)...really huge

Modern Art (above)....doesn't match its picture...we'll follow this one to see if it matures into it or I was simply sent the wrong one...

As promised, there are other things here besides daffodils (and many more of those to come...those pictured are mostly earlier ones)....here we go

Grape Hyacinths (above)...gotta have those, right?

My tiny tree peony is up and going (above)

One variety of woodland phlox getting ready to go (above)

Redbuds will be starting very soon...isn't it wild how buds pop out all over (above)

Almost azalea time (above)

Pink Almond about ready to pop (above)

It made it! Helped by our mild winter this year, undoubtedly....my non bridal wreath spirea (above)

Glory of the Snow (above)

Virginia Bluebells (above)

Self seeded foxglove, rose campion and variegated columbine (above)

Self seeded Japanese Iris....hope they bloom...maybe something new, who knows (above)

Earliest of the peonies with buds (above)

Look carefully...the raindrops are glinting off the emerging epimediums....cool...(above)

They'll never go away...big sigh...two eradications...unsuccessful...tiger lilies (above)

Hip hip hooray! This, dear blogworld friends, is....my emerging gas plant! Yes! Three times I've tried to grow this...and finally....it had a rough autumn...broken off...mulch removed by critters, etc...but, here it is! (above)

Okay...if you're still here (gold star to you!)....something really special (I think)...

You, yes you, are the first ones to see this! This is a daffodil seedling! Making its first appearance in the world...we'll see how it does...I have nothing like this in all my daffodils...and, you know what else....this is a gift from mother nature! You got it. I didn't do this. Let me show you where it is:

That's it from behind. There's a group of assorted daffodils nearby...you can just see them in the right corner. However, I made this bed...despite the orange builder's clay (time and amending and a never-give-up attitude help)...no daffodils were ever planted there...it seems to be a good area for seedlings...the Japanese Iris ones are nearby and I find daylily seedlings in there as well. Well, we'll have to watch it and see what it does in the future, how well it increases, etc. There's some other smallish daffodil foliage nearby, so maybe there will be other seedlings in the future. I have no idea how long it takes for seeds to make it to this point. The daffodils that it probably came from (although there are lots of others, depending on the time frame) were planted probably in 1999, maybe 2000. I'll have to check the trusty spreadsheet.

So, there you have it! A first!

A rare peek at my garden...I'm no landscaper, but spring is just so fun...have a look

Walking to the front door (above)...

Riley enjoying the blooms (above).....yes, I am not into grass...

Korean Spice Viburnun, assorted daffs, and creeping phlox coming into bloom...more things to come, but a nice early show (above)

A little look at one part of my backyard (above)...can't wait for the daylilies...obviously, there's more room for daffodils (hehe)...maybe now you begin to see how I crowd everything in.

I've just run out of time because there is more...tulips, for instance...the early ones are blooming. My "to blog" list grows ever longer...but, never mind...it's spring!
