Spring....in a hurry...

With a week or so of temps in the high 80s, spring went into overdrive here. I saw daffodil blooms wilting. That shocked me until I realized that, of course, they were stressed...they're used to blooming with temperatures in the 60s. The heat was hard on them! Unfortunately, blooms that usually last a week or more were gone within a day or two.

Not just daffodils. The flowers on the crab apple tree lasted at most 2-3 days. Azaleas are blooming here now.

Anyway, it felt a bit like daylily season when I rush around trying to get pictures. Daffodils usually afford me a number of chances to try to catch them looking their best. Not this year!

(a lighter blue and the blossom is shaped a bit differently)

Hmmm, I wonder if the daylilies will bloom earlier this year...

I always have pleasure in looking at your photos. Have to ask you: Where do you find all those wonderful daffodils?

These daffs are all stunners! Are there any of these that you think preform the best and give the greatest show? We have more than a dozen different daffs here and none are shown above.

Hello Ingmarie: I belong to the Washington Daffodil Society...every year (around now or pretty soon) members receive a list of daffodils that can be ordered. It's great fun to pick and choose!

The daffodils come from daffodil growers all over the world. Sometimes, like this past fall, they can have trouble making it through customs...boohoo. However, I still got most of my order.

I highly recommend joining a society. It's been by far the most reliable way to obtain bulbs that are true to name.

Hi Randy: That's a tough question as some of the ones in this post are new (planted last fall). I like to give them a few years. Some can take a bit to settle in.

I've put up a daffodil page at the top that lists my collection. There are some that I've noted that haven't performed well for me on it.

Every year I mean to do a daffodil review, but things start poppping and I get distracted...lol. I will try to remember to post about some that I do feel are very reliable and increase well.

When I order from the WDS (which has been my main source for the last three years), I seldom order more than one bulb (they can be pricey) of each. I'd rather have variety than quantity initially because, hopefully, the quantity will come.

Off the top of my head, I was really pleased with Cum Laude this year. Last fall I dug up the bulbs and it had increased very well. This year, they bloomed wonderfully in their new location. In fact, I found I had left three behind in their old location...lol.

Anyway, I'll get back to you in a bit on you question.

Thanks so much for coming by!

Beautiful! Daffs were my mom's favorite. She had a lot (we lived in Connecticut) but not as many as you have! They are sooooo lovely! Thanks for the pics! meo

p.s.

Do you dig in compost or use a special feed for them?
