Heat Wave...

A nice surprise this morning...a first time seedling blooming! As you can tell, it's blooming out of a box, so all expectations of bud count and branching are delayed. We'll wait to see what it can do in real soil, etc. Still, fun to see, as the season winds down...

When I sort through some photos...they're on four different external hard drives right now...making it difficult to find anything...we'll look at some more seedlings. I'm working on consolidating the photos onto one...

First, the gigantic Mascara Snake...

Boogie My Woogie, Baby....hasn't been opening well for me, but did on this bloom....showing what it can do. It's had great scapes this year. I wanted to take it (also) to the NCDC show....it's been having a little trouble opening wide like this picture, but I discovered I could 'help' it...which would be great for showing. So, on the morning of the show, I chose a scape that was awesome and took it into the garage. Once in the bucket, I confidently pushed on a petal to open it a bit wider when...to my dismay....the petal popped right off! Arghhhhhhh. (More on my tale of woe about this show another time)...if only it had looked like this that day. Ha.


It's hard to tell from my pictures, but Mascara Snake is much bigger...much...and is more burgundy to BMWB's more red tone.

All three are very nice lates and I'm happy to grow them.

I've been seeing more than a few of these guys...


Not thrilled about it/them as I think they're responsible for holes like this...


....not just in leaves, mind you....apparently, buds are quite tasty, too.

Self seeded flowers....white petunias and some flowering tobacco...

....off to work on the ribs (my son's visiting and that means ribs on the grill with his favorite sides like sweet potatoes, baked beans and cornbread).....

Still Going....

Larry Allen Miller...a beautiful daylily....new to me this year and the blooms have just been stunning...plus, it's reblooming!


Cerulean Warbler...one I saw in FL last year and had to have...it struggled out this spring, worrying me for a bit, but seems to be doing great now...good increase and reblooming...


Forsyth White Buds...


Greenway...not quite up to its perfection of last year, but since I thought it was a goner, I'm thrilled it's still here...even if it is only two fans holding on...


This is Bridgeton Ivy League...relatively unknown, I think, came to me as a bonus from the hybridizer (Dr. Apps). It's quite the performer. A late with big strong and sturdy scapes. I seriously thought about taking it to the NCDC show, but discovered it had been registered at a very strange and small four inches. My blooms are at least five inches. I don't think they've ever been four inches. Depending on the judges panel, this could doom it. So, no sense in bothering with it...however, we can still enjoy it...




Cather in the Eye...reblooming...


Taken in the shade this morning, Watermelon Luminosity...one that is starting to shine...also on rebloom...


A bit of a different view of Stippled Statement...taken early enough that the sepals haven't started to recurve...love all the teeth...


Mixed feelings on this one. It's kind of a brown red, if that makes sense. I think given another year it will show more what it can do...it's just the old space, space, space thing...and since it has a primo spot in the front yard, there are many vying to take its place (ha)...


This is same Bachman Seedling (#4) I showed the other day (should be more purple rather than the red it appears here)...


I show it because it is a bud builder, meaning that it keeps adding buds...which is a very good thing....and because I saw it has a prolif with a bud...


Prolifs, as we know, are exact copies of the plant (unlike seeds)...gift plants, if you will...The scape needs to stay alive long enough for the prolif to develop roots. Anyway, quite an achievement for such a little guy.

And, for our amusement (or at least mine), Sam Cat in what we call Dead Bug Pose...or maybe just a mimic of his victims which he usually brings to this door...

More Michael Miller.....one of the nicest near whites...I remember Michael Miller saying he had asked Pat Stamile to name his best white for him....and, at the time, it was. Since then, Arctic Snow is pretty terrific as is White Mountains, but, still, hard to beat Michael Miller...


A couple of the Bachman seedlings I brought back from Ohio....Bachman as in the hybridizer of Suzy Cream Cheese (above) and others we will see some another time...


The one below is more purple, rather than red as it shows....having a bit of trouble with those purples...green throat, though, is accurate.


Truth in photography....I'm trying to be more diligent about noting when the colors are off in pictures. It's really a pet peeve of mine to see photos of daylilies where the color is way off and the photographer doesn't mention it. Really unfair, I think, to others who might consider acquiring it based on the inaccurate color. I know, it's hard (believe me, I know) to accurately photograph purples and even reds.....we can, however, at least let folks know whether the picture does reflect the actual flower....or learn photoshop...lol.

More to come....once these later ones are done, I'll go back to looking at how the earlier part of the season went...

Back in the Saddle

Last night seems to have brought a little rain...I think...much needed and much appreciated. Around midnight, I saw the sidewalk and stairs were damp but as of early (very) this morning, those areas were all dry... At any rate, there are still some daylilies in bloom here. These pictures from yesterday are the first I've attempted to organize this year of my daylilies. Just think of all the pictures from before yesterday there still are to go through...

LAST CHANCE FOR ROMANCE...a certain late from Jim Murphy....are you noticing all the buds?


Among the many things I have yet to blog about is my trip to the Northern Mecca this year. Despite my resolve to not bring home more daylilies....sigh...seedlings from three hybridizers' gardens did somehow find their way into the car. Can't wait to write about this trip and show lots of pictures...probably under the heading of Driving Miss Dayliily as my DH (esteemed daylily chauffeur) referred to it...In case you don't recall or are too young, that's a takeoff of a famous movie Driving Miss Daisy... Anyway, yesterday a few of the seedlings were having last or near last blooms (once again, I'm sure I have better pictures).....just for fun..... This is a Holmes' seedling that I was delighted to score...er...find among the thousands of wonderful seedlings there. Most of the ones (okay, all) were marked for either their own purposes or someone (drat) had beat me to a particular one. Somehow this one had escaped anyone's notice. What drew my attention was a scape with good branching as well as height, characteristics I would like to bring to my own seedlings. I'll write more about all this when I do the official post. For now, just note this is a cool bloom, although smaller than normal and with not quite as much movement...


...to my surprise....and delight...there was a bonus in this clump...



....a dropped seed, most likely....will be difficult to separate out as this scape is tight next to the others....I would expect these (and the other Holmes' seedlings) to be tets as it is my understanding that Sandy Holmes only works with tets.

A couple years ago, I visited Dan Bachman's briefly when we were in Ohio for a wedding. It was a bit early for their bloom season, but I still managed to come home with some seedings. As you might imagine, they have now come into their own and I'm quite pleased with them. A couple are still blooming now...which is late this year...and appear to be bud builders. The one I'm going to show you below is a giant bloom...and also purple, not red. Purples can be difficult to capture. Perhaps one day I'll learn the wonders of Photoshop or some such to fix these issues.


That wasn't so hard. Ha. Okay, I'll clue you in that I'm considering my options. Recently, I registered a domain name and am investigating hosting options. Since I am not a computer whiz at all, this will be quite the adventure. I have mixed feelings about it all. It's easy and comfortable here, but there are limits. Yes, unfortunately, limits. Which I don't like. At all. Very discouraging. If I were to post at my normal pace (lots of daylily pictures), I'd guess that I would probably be at or near my limit for photos.

So, stay tuned. Nothing will happen right away. I would encourage you to register your domain name if you are new to blogging. If you're not, it's probably too late...as I found out. Every version of Gotta Garden you can think of has been taken.
