Garden Trips: Sissinghurst

It's cold outside. Snow is everywhere. Schools are closed. Let's go somewhere fun!

Castle Garden is the famed garden of Vita Sackville-West and her husband Sir Harold Nicholson. It is now part of the National Trust scheme (as the British say) as the taxes due upon the deaths of Sackville-West and Nicholson would have caused the sale and loss of the garden(s). Sir Harold made arrangements with the National Trust to take over the properties upon his death (and after Vita's) so that the gardens would remain. We were told their son still lives on the property in a home on one corner.

It was crowded on the May day in 2006 that we arrived. Lots of avid gardeners eager to see everything and, in some areas, it was a tight squeeze. Nonetheless, it was a wonderful English spring day and the showers that came out later didn't deter a single one of us.

Isn't this fun?

Or this?

But, I know what you really want to see are some beautiful flowers:

How about some long views:

I hope you enjoyed our little tour! There's still more to come (another time), some views from the tower (you can see so far!), trilliums (I love trilliums!) and assorted other views.

I was going to say, that seemed like an awfully long trip to make! Then I realized it was the one from last year!

Yes, indeed and more to come! See what we were doing while you and Buddy were hanging out back here?!

I resized these photos and reloaded them and they're still coming up large here...you'll have to let me know if they're coming up large there, too.

Thank you so much! I love touring gardens. I doubt very much that I will ever get to England to see the famous gardens like this one.

Great tour! I am always curious when I see these great old garden estates... is there really so much stuff that you get exhausted just walking around the place? That's always the impression I get...

There was a lot to see! I didn't get exhausted, but it was a bit crowded. It was actually larger than I first thought. You'll see more when I get around to posting the pictures from the tower!

Thanks for coming by!

Hi Gotta Garden,
I just came over Kate´s blog to yours side!
You are lucky to have visited Sissinghurst Castle. My Mum was there two or three years ago and last month she gave me a book about the history of Sissinghurst. It impressed me very much and I hope I can go there one day too!

Greetings from Austria, Verena
